Interesting Info about the Herb Snail
Because our organic herbs come from very varied climate zones and geographical areas, they each have very different needs when it comes to soil, temperature and moisture. The herb spiral (also affectionately referred to as the Herb Snail) helps us to meet these requirements within a very small space.
The rocks store the sun's warmth and transmit this to the plants. The foot of the spiral is formed by a miniature pond, which stores and reflects additional warmth. In this way, it can actually handle night-time frosts of as low as-5° C!
By adding sand at the upper and compost at the lower end of the spiral, the soil ranges from sandy and nutrient-poor, to loamy and nutrient-rich. Thus, Mediterranean plants thrive at the top of the spiral, while plants from damper, cooler zones do better at the bottom.
Through the broad range of living conditions, the herb spiral also serves as a habitat for a wide variety of animals. These include a number of creatures that are useful in the garden, such as many insects, toads and birds. Because of their positive benefits, the use of man-made products is frequently unnecessary.
